Trekking routes in Myanmar remain largely
undiscovered by tourists, offering an exciting challenge. Shan State
offers the exceptional hiking near the town of Kalaw, including treks
to the magical Inle Lake and around the surrounding hills. Trails in
this area can take from just a day up to one week and include a
fascinating insight into tribes such as the colourful Palaung.
Mount Popa is another interesting trekking site with a number
of routes to its summit or into the crater of the dormant volcano
said to be some
250,000 years old. The fertile surrounding area is
bursting with plant life nourished by volcanic
ash – a great day’s trip within |
