Mrauk U PDF Print E-mail

mraukuMrauk U is the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Rakhine (A.D.1430 to A.D.1784); the people live, nowadays, in the southwestern part of Myanmar. It is 65 km (40ml), or six or seven hours away by boat from the city of Sittwe. It lies at the head of the tributary of the Kalandan River. The city is covered with many creeks and canals. Today, Mrauk U is a quiet town in the foothills of the Chin Mountains. The average annual temperature is 25 degree C (77 degree F). Even in the summer, the temperature seldom goes up very high due to the sea breeze and lush vegetation. The annual rainfall reaches from 400 cm (157 in) to 500 cm (197 in).

Mrauk U, associated with 150 stone temples, is the most important archeological site after Bagan. However, to get to the site is one of the highlights of visiting the site. One gets to the nearest town Sittwe by plane and from Sittwe to Mrauk U by motored boat along the Kalatan River for six or seven hours that provides you with the different sceneries along the Kaladan River. On your way you can be accompanied by many different kinds of water birds, stocks, heron, wild ducks and geese. The river banks will be lined with mangroves and thick vegetation.  There are lots of fruit trees grow here, such as jackfruit, banana, mango, coconut, papaya, pineapple, etc. All temples and stupas in Mrauk U are from the 15th to the 17th centuries, and most monuments in Mrauk U are built mainly in compact-sand stone bearing the most exquisite stone carvings. The temples stand among the vegetation and weeds. In its heydays, Mrauk U was a free trading port for the merchants from Portugal, Spain, Holland, along with Asia and Middle East. Some Europeans used it as their trading base and stayed long enough to have a small European community established, that the evidence of their living quarter in the past still can be traced in the town, today. After first Anglo Burmese War (1824-26), British had their administrative headquarters in Sittwe, and as a result, Mrauk U became a politically important city.  Mrauk U is also known as Myohaung. In mid May, near the Dukanthein Pagoda there is the pagoda festival that last for the whole week. The archeological interests are enhanced by the idyllic river called the Lay Myo River. One can cruise along the river by a small motored boat to visit the traditional Chin villages to observe their unique lifestyle.
